a work in sound • sound art by Laura Maes, sounds performed by Vasco DelnesteLaura Maes
These are the sounds of Vasco Delneste, recorded by artist Laura Maes in 2010. No sounds are electronically processed or altered, and not a single sound is used twice, even though some sound similar. Maes structures them electronically: they paint a portrait that is simultaneously deeply human and unearthly.

A work in sound • sound artist: Sirpa JokinenSirpa Jokinen
The soundwork is based on recordings made inside the Hagia Sofia museum in Istanbul during its opening hours. It is an attempt to capture the special acoustic situation inside the building. The recording locations are changed between the second balcony and the ground floor under the main dome. We here the guts, the very entrails, of the Hagia resonate with a sense of elegant expansiveness and infrasound boom.

A work in sound • artist: Melanie Chilianis (with the voice of Michael Chang)Melanie Chilianis
The piece MCVox by Melanie Chilianis was initially part of Danish artist Michael Chang’s collaborative exhibition Fragments (Arnot Art Museum, New York State, April 2011). It uses vocal sources from Melanie Chilianis and Michael Chang in various degrees of intelligibility and duration. It was made during a particularly bad phase of chronic illness (migraine and epileptic seizures), when everyday communication was often difficult and visual and aural perceptions were distorted.

A work in sound • sound art: Ali CocksAli Cocks
Semiotic Stomach features Ali Cocks’ digestive sounds recorded internally with a hydrophone. These recordings were then incorporated into a larger sonic narrative: a human and British journey through birth, infancy, town nightlife, marginalised queer city happenings and normative supermarket visits. The turmoil present in the digestive sounds can be heard as a response to the narrative of the social body.
